What is an Underground Pet Fence?

Underground Pet Fence 101

An electric pet containment system is used to keep pets in a yard without installing any physical barriers. Wires are buried underground to mark the desired boundary. A transmitter communicates with the wire’s radio frequency and the dog’s collar. When the dog or cat approaches the designated boundary, a radio signal activates a warning sound that only the animal can hear.

If the dog or cat continues to approach the boundary, the collar offers a mild shock to the animal to deter them from walking further. Over time, the pet will learn to respect the boundaries as they begin to understand the correlation between the sound and the shock.

Installation Cost and Maintenance

An underground pet fence is typically more affordable to install than a traditional fence. It will not obstruct your view and it will not cause harm to humans. A wireless pet fence is very low maintenance, as you will not need to repaint or re-stain it. The only real maintenance required is the replacement of the batteries in the dog or cat’s collar.

The main components of an underground dog fence are:

1. The Transmitter

- Mounted inside the home or garage

- Sends radio signal through the wire

2. The Wire

- Buried several inches underground

- Mark virtual boundary of the fence

3. The Collar

- Adjustable settings, based on dog’s size

- Delivers safe shock to the dog

Customizing Your Fence

This type of underground fence offers a lot of flexibility. Unlike a traditional fence, the boundaries of a wireless pet containment fence are easily customizable. You can design the fence to prevent the dog from entering a tool shed, greenhouse, or garden. Additionally, if you have more than one dog, each collar can be customized to the dog’s size and the shock adjusted accordingly.
